 What Is Virtualization?

Virtualization addresses IT’s most pressing challenge: the infrastructure sprawl that compels IT departments to channel 70 percent of their budget into maintenance, leaving scant resources for business-building innovation.

The difficulty stems from the architecture of today’s X86 computers: they’re designed to run just one operating system and application at a time. As a result, even small data centers have to deploy many servers, each operating at just five percent to 15 percent of capacity—highly inefficient by any standard.

Virtualization software solves the problem by enabling several operating systems and applications to run on one physical server or “host.” Each self-contained “virtual machine” is isolated from the others, and uses as much of the host’s computing resources as it requires

 What is server virtualization?

Server virtualization is a proven technology that enables multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical server. Each virtual machine is completely isolated from other virtual machines and is decoupled from the underlying host by a thin layer of software known as a hypervisor. This allows each virtual machine to run different operating systems and applications. Because the machines have been decoupled from the underlying host, the guest can also be moved from one physical server host to another while running; this is known as live migration. These attributes are transforming how organizations approach virtual computing.

XenServer, Hyper-V, VMsphere are the enterprise-ready, cloud-proven virtualization platforms that contains all the capabilities required to create and manage a virtual infrastructure. They are trusted by demanding organizations to run the most mission critical applications and used by the largest clouds.

•    Cuts costs. By reducing the number of physical servers required in the datacenter, organizations are able to save on their power and cooling costs.
•    Increases IT agility and efficiency. Customers can easily adapt to changing datacenter and computing needs by dynamically flexing capacity, optimizing VM placement, and automating repetitive management tasks.
•    Improves performance and user productivity. By enabling 'zero downtime' maintenance, automatically recovering from hardware failure, and providing failover capabilities in disaster situations, end users are ensured access to mission critical application in all scenarios.

Server Virtualization

The architecture of today's x86 servers allows them to run only one operating system at a time. Server virtualization unlocks the traditional one-to-one architecture of x86 servers by abstracting the operating system and applications from the physical hardware, enabling a more cost-efficient, agile and simplified server environment. Using server virtualization, multiple operating systems can run on a single physical server as virtual machines, each with access to the underlying server's computing resources.

Server virtualization unleashes the potential of today's powerful x86 servers. Most servers operate less than 15 percent of capacity; not only is this highly inefficient, it also introduces server sprawl and complexity.

VMware vSphere offers a complete server virtualization platform that delivers:

  • 80 percent greater utilization of server resources
  • Up to 50 percent savings in capital and operating costs
  • 10:1 or better server consolidation ratio

Network Virtualization

Network virtualization is the complete reproduction of a physical network in software. Virtual networks offer the same features and guarantees of a physical network, yet they deliver the operational benefits and hardware independence of virtualization—rapid provisioning, nondisruptive deployment, automated maintenance and support for both legacy and new applications.

Network virtualization presents logical networking devices and services—logical ports, switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, VPNs and more—to connected workloads. Applications run on the virtual network exactly the same as if on a physical network.

You can create a highly scalable network fabric that provides greater levels operational efficiency and agility, faster provisioning, troubleshooting and cloning, with monitoring, QoS, and security all backed by VMware network virtualization software.

VMware NSX™ will be the world's leading network and security virtualization platform providing a full-service, programmatic and mobile virtual network for virtual machines, deployed on top of any general purpose IP network hardware.

Application Virtualization

Organizations are increasingly virtualizing more of their Tier 1 mission-critical business applications and platforms, such as databases, ERP, CRM, email, collaboration, Java middleware, business intelligence and many others.

In order to maintain the required levels of QoS and SLA for these Tier 1 business applications in virtual environments, IT organizations must focus equally on the virtualization components of the project and on the robust management and monitoring of virtualized business applications, as well as on maintaining corporate guidelines for business continuity and disaster recovery.

These virtualized applications simply run better and provide high availability, disaster recovery, speed and agility as well as cloud-readiness. With the VMware Tier 1 Application Virtualization solution built on VMware vCloud® Suite™, you can enhance the quality of IT services delivered, while simplifying your infrastructure, maximizing efficiency and eliminating costly over-provisioning.

Storage Virtualization

Storage virtualization is part of the software-defined storage layer that must offer improvements in performance and space efficiency without requiring the purchase of additional storage hardware.

It must enable rapid provisioning so that high-performance, space-efficient storage can be spun up as fast as a VM can be spun up today. It must offer a VM-centric storage management model that is intuitive for virtual administrators who are taking on more of the storage management tasks in virtual environments. And it must integrate with the hypervisor platform to leverage familiar, native workflows.

VMware storage virtualization is a combination of capabilities that provide an abstraction layer for physical storage resources to be addressed, managed and optimized in a virtualization deployment.

Storage virtualization technology provides a fundamentally better way to manage storage resources for your virtual infrastructure, giving your organization the ability to:

  • Significantly improve storage resource utilization and flexibility
  • Simplify OS patching and driver requirements, regardless of storage topology
  • Increase application uptime and simplify day-to-day operations
  • Leverage and complement your existing storage infrastructure

Virtualize for Efficiency, Higher Availability and Lower Costs

Virtualization is the single most effective way to reduce IT expenses while boosting efficiency and agility—not just for large enterprises, but for small and midsize businesses too. VMware virtualization lets you:

  • Run multiple operating systems and applications on a single computer.
  • Consolidate hardware to get vastly higher productivity from fewer servers.
  • Save 50 percent or more on overall IT costs.
  • Speed up and simplify IT management, maintenance, and the deployment of new applications.

How Virtualization Works

The heart of virtualization is the “virtual machine” (VM), a tightly isolated software container with an operating system and application inside. Because each virtual machine is completely separate and independent, many of them can run simultaneously on a single computer. A thin layer of software called a hypervisor decouples the virtual machines from the host and dynamically allocates computing resources to each virtual machine as needed.

This architecture redefines your computing equation and delivers:

  • Many applications on each server. As each virtual machine encapsulates an entire machine, many applications and operating systems can be run on one host at the same time.
  • Maximum server utilization, minimum server count. Every physical machine is used to its full capacity, allowing you to significantly reduce costs by deploying fewer servers overall.
  • Faster, easier application and resource provisioning. As self-contained software files, virtual machines can be manipulated with copy-and-paste ease. This brings unprecedented simplicity, speed and flexibility to IT provisioning and management. virtual machines can even be transferred from one physical server to another while running, via a process known as live migration. You can also virtualize business-critical apps to improve performance, reliability, scalability and reduce costs.

 Virtualization Defined

Levels of Virtualization

Server Consolidation

Virtualizing one or two servers is just the beginning. The next step is to aggregate a server cluster into a single consolidated resource. For example, instead of 20 servers running at 15 percent of capacity each, you can reduce your hardware count—and associated costs—to four servers, each performing at 80 percent.

Desktop Virtualization

VMware enables you to deliver secure virtual desktops as a managed service for remote and branch office employees. Our virtual desktop solutions increase business flexibility, simplify management and reduce your costs.

Storage Consolidation

VMware offers an automated, easy-to-deploy solution that virtualizes storage—combining your existing server disks into a shared pool, without the cost and complexity of purchasing a SAN system.

Software-Defined Data Center

Ultimately, you can attain the full efficiency and agility of cloud computing by virtualizing, pooling and automating all data center resources—servers, storage, networking, security and availability—and tying everything together with policy-based provisioning and automated operations management. The result is a software-defined data center where:

  • Capacity expands and contracts as needed.
  • Applications can be provisioned on-demand.
  • Every application is assured of the right levels of performance, compliance and security.
  • IT can shift resources and budget away from infrastructure management and maintenance, toward creating innovations that give your company an edge.

VMware vCloud® Suite is a complete solution that delivers everything you need to build a software-defined data center.

VMware Advantages

  • The most mature, proven, and comprehensive platform. VMware vSphere is fifth-generation virtualization—many years ahead of any alternative. It delivers higher reliability, more advanced capabilities, and greater performance than competing solutions. VMware’s virtualization pre-eminence is recognized universally by analysts and overwhelmingly by the marketplace.
  • High application availability. Purchased separately, high-availability infrastructure remains complex and expensive. But VMware integrates robust availability and fault tolerance right into our platform to protect all your virtualized applications. Should a node or server ever fail, all its VMs are automatically restarted on another machine, with no downtime or data loss.
  • Wizard-based guides for ease of installation. VMware’s wizard-based guides take the complexity out of setup and configuration. You can be up and running in one-third the deployment time of other solutions.
  • Simple, streamlined management. VMware lets you administer both your virtual and physical environments from a “single pane of glass” console right on your web browser. Time-saving features such as auto-deploy, dynamic patching, and live VM migration reduce routine tasks from hours to minutes. Management becomes much faster and easier, boosting productivity without adding to your head count.
  • Higher reliability and performance. Our platform blends CPU and memory innovations with a compact, purpose-built hypervisor that eliminates the frequent patching, maintenance and I/O bottlenecks of other platforms. The net result is best-in-class reliability and consistently higher performance; for heavy workloads, VMware achieves 2-to-1 and 3-to-1 performance advantages over our nearest competitors.
  • Superior security. VMware’s hypervisor is far thinner than any rival, consuming just 144 MB compared with others’ 3-to-10 GB disk profile. Our small hypervisor footprint presents a tiny, well-guarded attack surface to external threats, for airtight security and much lower intrusion risk.
  • Greater savings. VMware trumps other virtualization solutions by providing 50 percent to 70 percent higher VM density per host—elevating per-server utilization rates from 15 percent to as high as 80 percent. You can run many more applications on much less hardware than with other platforms, for significantly greater savings in capital and operating costs.
  • Affordability. VMware is highest in capabilities, but not cost. Starting at $165 per server, our small business packages consolidate more of your applications on fewer servers, with greater performance—delivering the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership (TCO).
